In order to reduce output controls (output suppression) on renewable energy generation during the autumn when daytime demand is low, the Tohoku Electric Power Group will establish a points system to encourage a shift in demand to daytime hours during that same period.

On September 26, Tohoku Electric Power and its wholly owned subsidiary, Tohoku Electric Power Frontier (Sendai City), announced several new demand response (DR) services for low-voltage customers, such as general households and shops, that will offer special benefits for using electricity during daytime hours.

The "behavioral change type increased DR" initiative will award points according to the increased amount of electricity used at the designated time between October 1st and November 30th by shifting the operation of home appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines to DR hours.

Specifically, standard usage will be calculated based on the guidelines set by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, based on the most recent electricity usage of each customer. If the electricity usage during a specified time period exceeds the standard usage, one or more "Yorisou e-points" will be awarded per kWh of electricity.

In addition, an "equipment-controlled rising demand response" will be created for customers who own heat pump water heaters called "EcoCute." During designated times, customers' EcoCute will be remotely controlled to shift part of the water heating time to daytime hours in autumn. As a participation benefit, customers will receive 3,000 Yorisou e-points, and will receive at least 1 Yorisou e-point for every kWh of electricity generated compared to the amount of electricity used before the implementation date.

Meanwhile, for customers with stationary storage batteries, an "equipment-controlled downward DR" will be created as a measure to deal with peak demand in the summer and other times. The charging and discharging times of customers' storage batteries will be remotely controlled during specified times. As a participation bonus, customers will receive 3,000 Yorisou e-points. The two equipment-controlled services will be available year-round from October 1st.

To participate, customers must sign up for an eligible contract plan and register their contract information on the customer service site "Yorisou e-Net." In addition, those who sign up for behavioral change and device control-type DR will receive 100 Yorisou e-points as a first-time login bonus by downloading and logging in to the dedicated app "Tohoku Electric Power Eco Challenge" (not applicable to those who have already downloaded and logged in). According to Tohoku Electric Power, the number of eligible plan subscribers as of the end of August was 1,003,600.
