Tenaris to qualify tubulars and connections for hydrogen-ready underground gas storage wells

Tenaris has partnered with Snam and RINA to assess the capability of Underground Gas Storage (UGS) wells to manage gas blends of up to 100% hydrogen content, as well as to define a hydrogen-ready design for new wells.
Following a two-year joint research project aimed at defining a proper testing methodology to qualify tubulars and connections for underground hydrogen storage wells, a technical paper was presented at the SPE Europe Energy Conference in Turin, Italy. The conference showcased the latest technologies in the energy and E&P industry, with a strong focus on the energy transition.
Titled “Qualification of Tubulars and Connections for Use in Underground Hydrogen Storage,” the paper highlights the sealability of the TenarisHydril Blue® Dopeless® premium connection for hydrogen applications and offers a deeper understanding of the behavior of steel grades used for OCTG in hydrogen-rich environments.

Giacomo Marcolin, Tenaris technical sales manager for Europe, and one of the authors of the technical paper said ,
“This research addresses a critical gap in current standards, supporting Snam with a comprehensive experimental framework for materials and premium connections qualification in hydrogen-rich environments.
Beyond helping to ensure wells’ operational safety and integrity, these results may constitute a solid baseline for future work towards hydrogen-ready well construction application of tubulars in the energy industry,”
The qualified tubulars and connections are part of the Tenaris’s THera™ portfolio, which features materials technology tailored for hydrogen applications.
