Taihan breaks ground at new Korean cable plant
Operations to begin in 2027
3 October 2025 – Offshore Wind
Taihan has officially broken ground on a new Submarine Cable Plant in the Godae District of Dangjin, South Korea.
The facility will produce 640kV-class HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) and 400kV-class HVAC (High Voltage Alternating Current) submarine cables, with operations scheduled to begin in 2027.
Taihan described the new plant as the starting point of Korea’s west coast “Energy Highway” and a future strategic hub in the global submarine cable market.
At the groundbreaking event, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Jung-kwan Kim said:
“This is a meaningful moment as Taihan, Korea’s first cable manufacturer, secures advanced production capabilities in submarine HVDC cables. The groundbreaking of Submarine Plant 2 will actively contribute to the government’s agenda of building an ‘Energy Highway.’”
The new facility will be built on a 215,000-square-metre site adjacent to Taihan’s existing plant and will feature a 180-meter-tall Vertical Continuous Vulcanization (VCV) system. Once completed, it will deliver five times the production capacity of Taihan’s current cable plant.
Taihan Vice Chairman Jong-min Song added:
“Offshore wind power and HVDC submarine cables are strategic industries directly tied to national industrial competitiveness and energy security. Through Submarine Plant 2, we will strengthen the nation’s energy infrastructure, advance the renewable energy industry, and establish a foundation for global market leadership.”
