Tokyo's Minato Ward will open the Takanawa Embankment, a railway ruin built about 150 years ago, to the public on September 8 and 9. Since September, the ward's Board of Education has been surveying nine locations between JR Shinagawa Station and Takanawa Gate Station to determine how much of the ruins remain. Only one of the locations will be open to the public, and it will be filled after the public release process is complete. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both days. Participation is free. No registration is required, and you can access the site directly.

A press tour was held on the 3rd. The site is the Takanawa Gateway City Phase II construction site (blocks 5 and 6). It is located southwest of Takanawa Gateway Station. What remains is part of the structure that opened in 1872 as Japan's first railway between Shinbashi and Yokohama. About 2.7 km of this section was diverted over the sea because of the difficulty of obtaining land. The surrounding area was reclaimed in the 19th century and today only an underground embankment remains.
The ward has excavated and investigated 9 locations and confirmed that there are wall stones, fill stones and part of the embankment. Based on the survey results, the value as a cultural asset will be assessed in the future. Before filling, the inside of ``Trench 1'' excavated on an area of 174 square meters will be displayed to the public.
Construction of Takanawa Gateway City is underway to the north of Blocks 5 and 6. To the south, progress is being made on the development of the Shinagawa Station Area (tentative name), which includes JR and Keikyu Group station facilities. Large-scale development is expected to begin in the future Blocks 5 and 6.
“These are very important results,” a JR East official said of the survey results, adding, “There are various ways to balance cultural assets and town development. We will consider this while receiving advice from experts and the government.” I want to,” he said.
Remains have also been found in the Takanawa Gateway City development area. The company plans to preserve some of them and make them available for public viewing.
