Oriana Power announces giant electrolyser plant for green hydrogen and e-fuels.
Renewable energy player Oriana Power will build a gigawatt-scale plant to produce alkaline electrolysers and Balance of Plant (BOP) modules locally in India, the company said on Tuesday.
The plant will be commissioned in two phases, with the first phase with an annual capacity of 500 megawatts (MW) for the production of electrolysers expected to be operational in 2026. The new plant is being set up in partnership with Splitwaters, a US-based supplier of advanced alkaline electrolysers and Balance of Plant (BOP) equipment.
The company said in a press release:
This plant will be a critical part of the company’s efforts to develop green hydrogen and e-fuels, including green ammonia, e-methanol and green methanol.
Oriana Power’s collaboration with US-based Splitwaters, announced last month, will see the company use cutting-edge electrolysis technology to ensure highly efficient hydrogen production from renewable energy sources, the company said.
BOP systems will support the electrolysers by managing critical functions such as water supply, gas separation and purification, ensuring optimum performance and reliability.
Anirudh Saraswat, Chief Commercial Officer at Oriana Power, said:
The green hydrogen market faces significant challenges due to high upfront capital costs and long lead times, but Splitwaters’ one-stop-shop model and modular technology effectively addresses both of these issues.
“Our partnership with Splitwaters allows us to deploy their cutting-edge technology to produce these clean energy carriers at scale and at a significantly lower cost, up to 30% lower CAPEX than competing methods.” Oriana Power said it is also working to develop green hydrogen and e-fuels projects in the UK and Europe, in partnership with Splitwaters.
“Benefits from the Green Hydrogen and e-fuels business will start by next financial year and we expect this business to contribute a significant portion of our revenues by financial year 2027,” Saraswat added.
