Mercedes-Benz signs a contract for the supply of 50,000 tons of carbon-free steel with H2 Green Steel

After BWM and Marcegaglia , the Swedish company H2 Green Steel has welcomed another prestigious name in the international industry to its customer list: Mercedes-Benz.

The Teutonic automotive giant has in fact signed with the Scandinavian steel group – which will produce green steel thanks to hydrogen, and which recently finalized the order for a mega-electrolyser from thyssenkrupp nucera (jv between thyssenkrupp and De Nora) – a contract for the supply of 50,000 tonnes of steel for the production of passenger cars in Europe. At the same time, Mercedes also signed a memorandum with H2 Green Steel for the future supply of green steel produced in the United States.

Mercedes-Benz was one of the first investors in H2 Green Steel and had already entered into an off-taking agreement with the Swedish company, which has now been transformed into a binding contract for 50,000 tonnes of steel, which will be produced in the Boden.

“H2 Green Steel was born because some major players in the automotive sector, such as Mercedes-Benz, complained of the excessively slow pace of the energy transition undertaken by the steel industry” explained Henrik Henriksson, CEO of H2 Green Steel. "With this contract we have acquired a customer but also a very strong partner who will be able to help us consolidate our operations in Europe and also to enter the American market".

Mercedes-Benz and H2 Green Steel will also work together to create a scrap recovery and recycling system at the Boden plant.

“With the contract for the supply of 50,000 tons of 'carbon-free' steel destined for our production plants in Europe, we consolidate our partnership with H2 Green Steel, which will also materialize in North America in the near future” added Markus Schäfer, Chief Technology Officer, Development & Procurement of Mercedes-Benz Group AG.
