Texas-based Flowserve Corporation and Canada’s Hydrogen Optimized have inked a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance hydrogen production.
Under the agreement, Flowserve will provide its SIHI Liquid Ring Compressor to Hydrogen Optimized for use with the company’s patented RuggedCell™ water electrolyser system at a demonstration facility in Ontario, Canada.
Additionally, the Texan company will provide engineering support to assist in flow equipment selection, specification and standardisation to help optimise the efficiency of the back end of its hydrogen production.
The collaboration is hoped to accelerate the commercialisation of Hydrogen Optimized’s electrolyser system, while offering Flowserve performance data on its products.
In December 2021, Hydrogen Optimized said it achieved a “world’s first” for water electrolysis units by ramping its RuggedCell system from 0 to 50,000 amperes in less than 10 seconds.

Earlier this year (2023) the company said it achieved high performance benchmarks for the system, after testing the electrolyser in a simulation of variable power conditions.
Commenting on the new agreement, Andrew Stuart, President and CEO of Hydrogen Optimized, said, “We look forward to demonstrating how the integration of RuggedCell™ water electrolysers with Flowserve compressors will create an exceptional product that meets the rapidly emerging demand for large-scale green hydrogen systems.”
Mike Mancuso, Vice-President, Marketing and Technology at Flowserve, added, “We are thrilled to team up with Hydrogen Optimized as we are fully aligned in our goals to accelerate decarbonisation solutions globally.”
“While we work in lockstep to reduce carbon emissions, we also look forward to the valuable insights we will gain from this partnership which will have pave the way for Flowserve’s future production innovation – better enabling our customers to meet their decarbonisation goals,” Mancuso added.
