On the 18th, the Chubu Regional Hydrogen and Ammonia Society Promotion Council (Chairman: Governor Hideaki Omura), which includes Aichi Prefecture, private companies, economic organizations, and government agencies, announced joint cooperation to build a supply chain for hydrogen, ammonia, etc. A basic agreement was signed to do so. The agreement was signed at a signing ceremony held at STATION Ai, a startup facility in Nagoya's Showa Ward, attended by Governor Omura and 20 private companies, including Vice President Hiroki Nakajima (Toyota Motor Corporation).

The companies have signed basic agreements
The Chubu region's hydrogen and ammonia supply chain plan, drafted by the Promotion Council in July, estimates that annual demand will be 200,000 tons of hydrogen and 100,000 tons of ammonia by 2030. It outlines plans to gradually establish storage and supply facilities at the ports of Chita, Yokkaichi, and Mikawa. With the implementation of the Hydrogen Society Promotion Law in October, the national government is expected to begin making proposals for a plan to promote the supply and use of hydrogen and ammonia, expected to begin in fiscal 2030.
The basic agreement states that in order to achieve carbon neutrality (CN) by 2050, the two sides will build a supply chain through joint cooperation, including research cooperation on hydrogen and ammonia supply and demand as well as proactive initiatives.
In the future, the promotion council will collaborate and cooperate with each company with the aim of obtaining a support system and plan certification from the government. We will request the government to support fuel price differentials based on the Hydrogen Society Promotion Act, support for facility development, and support for land and infrastructure development.
Governor Omura stated, "This is a big step towards building a supply chain in Chubu towards realizing CN in 50 years. We want to cooperate further with companies and move towards concrete projects," and stated that he will take the lead in lobbying vigorously to the national government and relevant parties.
JERA President Hisae Okuda is working on converting coal into ammonia as fuel at the Hekinan Thermal Power Plant in Hekinan City, and said, “This spring, we conducted the final large-scale ammonia combustion test and it was successful.” He said, “We want to start commercial operations by converting 20% into ammonia and burning it,” adding, “We will need to produce and purchase a very large amount of ammonia. We want to cooperate with surrounding industries to promote the realization of a hydrogen society in the Chubu region,” he said enthusiastically.
Shigeru Kobayashi, president of NGK Insulators, also said: ``Because this is a ceramic industry, it emits carbon dioxide (CO2). We have to switch to using hydrogen, ammonia, etc. as fuel as soon as possible.''
