The University of Tokyo has established a social collaboration course with the next-generation railway as its research theme. In cooperation with two companies, JR East and JR East Consultants, we will promote research such as the development of new demand forecasting methods. Before and after the large-scale switching work scheduled at JR Shibuya Station in January 2023, we will work on acquiring flow data to understand how the flow of people has changed. It is assumed that the course will be established for three years.

The name of the course is "Next Generation Railway Research Body Course". It was opened on the 1st at the Department of Civil Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, University of Tokyo. With the spread of the new coronavirus infection, the social positioning of railways and station town spaces has changed significantly. We will also focus on activities to design and propose the optimal layout of stations and surrounding facilities using 3D models.

Hiroshi Koyama, managing executive officer of JR East, Takashi Fuse, head of the Graduate School of Tokyo University, and others attended the inauguration ceremony held at the JR East Consulting Headquarters in Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo on the 17th (photo provided by JR East). Mr. Koyama and Mr. Fuse emphasized the significance of researching the future of railways through industry-academia collaboration, based on the trends of the corona disaster.

In the keynote speech, Professor Eiji Hato, who is in charge of the course, presented his findings on the theme of "Introduction to the social collaboration course overview and new developments in railway flow observation and prediction." In the panel discussion that followed, Koji Saito, Manager of JR East Tokyo Construction Project Management Office, and Atsushi Yamazaki, Director of Planning and General Affairs Headquarters Future Society and DX Promotion Office of JR East Consulting, took the podium. We introduced the demand forecasting method that we have developed in our company.
