Coca-Cola is set to trial a hydrogen-fuelled long-haul truck as part of its supply operations, as part of a project with Toyota and Air Liquide.

Toyota has joined the two companies in testing a heavy-duty truck, which boasts a fuel cell system and is powered by green hydrogen produced and supplied by Air Liquide.

A statement released by Toyota read, “The collaboration highlights the significance of concurrent development of both vehicles and infrastructure to help foster a more sustainable society.”

Eric Desbonnets, Vice-President Paris 2024 Operations at Coca-Cola, said, “We want to learn from this experience as we continue to work towards reducing our carbon footprint.”

Coca-Cola Italia also introduced hydrogen-powered logistics trucks in 2022, as part of its ambition to decarbonise road transport by 2040.

Toyota Motor Europe Vice-President R&D, Thiebault Paquet, explained, “To help speed up the expansion of hydrogen technology implementation in our society, we are expanding the use of our Toyota Fuel Cell Module beyond passenger cars and into trucks, coaches, trains, boats, near-shore and shore-sea vessels, stationary generators and so on.

“The insights gained from these proofs-of-concept will serve as crucial milestones on our path towards achieving zero tailpipe carbon emissions in our logistics operations by 2040.”

Speaking to H2 View earlier this year (2024), Paquet claimed the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris – which kicks off its first sporting activities today (July 24) – will be the ideal event to showcase the use of hydrogen, which is being demonstrated in Toyota’s vehicles.

Providing up to 500 hydrogen-powered vehicles to the event, Paquet said, “We wanted to show our multi-pathway thinking. We also plan to have 50% less of CO2 transport emissions when compared with previous Olympics via our vehicle fleet.”
