Namie's Hydrogen Production Facility Extends Demonstration for P2G Practical Use

Toshiba Energy Systems (Kawasaki City), Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc., and Iwatani Sangyo are working together to develop the "Fukushima Hydrogen Energy We will work on the advancement of system control using “Research Field (FH2R)”. The three companies announced on April 27 that they have extended the contract period for the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) demonstration project until the end of fiscal 2025.

In NEDO's public offering project "Technology development project for building a hydrogen society / Hydrogen energy system technology development / Business model construction of hydrogen system using renewable energy and technology development related to large-scale demonstration", basic study (FS phase), System technology development (demonstration phase) was implemented from FY2017 to FY2022. This time, the system technology development (demonstration phase) has been extended until FY2025.

Power-to-Gas is expected to be one of the methods to effectively utilize renewable energy such as solar power and wind power without output control. On the other hand, in order to achieve this, it is necessary not only to adjust the supply and demand balance of the power system (demand response), but also to establish a system that optimally manufactures and supplies hydrogen for fuel cells and fuel cell vehicles based on hydrogen supply and demand forecasts. Become. The FH2R is equipped with a 10MW-class hydrogen production unit, and can be used to adjust the supply and demand balance of the power system through hydrogen production and supply. Through system operation based on demand response and hydrogen supply and demand forecast, we aim to establish clean and low-cost hydrogen production and supply technology that maximizes the use of renewable energy.

As a result of the project until FY2022, we have developed a hydrogen energy operation system, a power system control system, and a hydrogen demand prediction system, and have established the basic technology to achieve both power-to-gas hydrogen production/supply and demand response. It was confirmed that the FH2R facility could be used to adjust the amount of hydrogen production at the necessary timing, and respond to the needs of products for the supply and demand adjustment market that procure the adjustment power of the power system. In addition, in order to establish a power-to-gas business, it is necessary to continue to maintain low-cost hydrogen production costs without making changes to hydrogen production facilities, and to improve the power supply and demand balance adjustment function for the power system. was found to be essential.

From FY2023 onwards, we will develop mechanisms and technologies for controlling the timing of hydrogen supply and demand and the amount of hydrogen, as well as technologies for optimizing the operation of hydrogen production facilities in order to realize low-cost hydrogen production. In addition, we aim to develop technology for enhancing the adjustment function that can supply adjustment power to the power system even when combined with multiple facilities other than FH2R. Through this business, we will promote efforts toward commercialization of the Power-to-Gas business model after 2030.

Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Co., Ltd. will be in charge of coordinating the entire project and the overall hydrogen energy system. Tohoku Electric Power will verify the utilization of a hydrogen energy system that is premised on a stable supply of electricity, and verify the advanced control of an AC system that integrates multiple resource aggregators and manages overall control commands. Iwatani will verify the hydrogen demand prediction system and the hydrogen supply and demand management system and supply hydrogen ( Related article: Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics illuminated by "Solar Hydrogen" from Fukushima ).
