Japan Water Agency/Tone River Estuary Dam Groundbreaking Ceremony for Large-Scale Earthquake Countermeasure Project Held by Stakeholders

On the 7th, the Japan Water Resources Agency (Chairman Kenji Kanao) held the "Large-scale Earthquake Countermeasure Project Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Tone River Estuary Dam" at the Tosho Community Center in Tosho Town, Chiba Prefecture. About 100 people from the organization, national and local officials gathered to celebrate the launch of the long-awaited project at the Kusudama Ball launch ceremony. Earthquake-proofing work will be carried out to maintain the function of the estuary dam, which has deteriorated over 50 years since its completion. The project implementation period is 15 years until 2038. The total project cost is expected to be about 55 billion yen.

Chiba Governor Toshito Kumagai, who welcomed him as a guest, expressed his expectations, saying, "The earthquake resistance of the Tone River Estuary Dam is an important initiative to protect the lives and property of the prefecture's residents from disasters and maintain important social functions. I am very grateful." I wrote it in there. Hiroyuki Fujimaki, Director General of the Water Management and Land Conservation Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, said, "It is great that the Tone River Estuary Dam has continued to support the region for more than half a century." century. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism will do its best to support the seismic construction work. "I want it," he said.

The Tone River Gate Dam was completed in 1971. Located at the downstream end of the Tone River, between Tosho Town and Kamisu City, Ibaraki Prefecture, it serves to prevent salt damage caused by seawater backflow and to supply water through multiple upstream water intake facilities. However, due to the progress of river scouring and deterioration of the gate structure and equipment, there is a risk that the building will lose its function in the event of a predicted earthquake directly hitting the Tokyo metropolitan area, so preparations for a large-scale earthquake began in fiscal 2014.
